Stronger Together Against Scams: GASA Launches North America Chapter

On the 21st of May 2025, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) launched its North America Chapter with a landmark virtual event titled Stronger Together Against Scams. The session marked a critical step forward in coordinating anti-scam efforts across the United States and Canada, uniting leaders from government, financial institutions and tech companies

The event was hosted by Ayelet Biger-Levin, North America Chapter Lead at GASA, who opened the session by framing the scale of the crisis: global losses to scams reached an estimated $1.03 trillion in 2024, affecting over a quarter of the global population.

Highlighting the cross-border nature of scam operations, Ayelet emphasised that defeating scams requires equally cross-border, cross-sector collaboration — the core mission of the new chapter.

The discussion brought together an exceptional panel of experts:

  • Kate Griffin, Director at The Aspen Institute, introduced the work of the National Task Force on Fraud and Scam Prevention, a multi-sector initiative aiming to build a coordinated national strategy in the US.

  • Mercedeh Mortazavi, Head of Financial Health at JPMorgan Chase, outlined the bank’s investment in fraud prevention and consumer education, while calling for stronger public-private partnerships to disrupt scams earlier in the life cycle.

  • Abigail Bishop, Head of External Relations at Amazon, shared lessons from Amazon’s global anti-scam initiatives and highlighted the importance of centralised regulatory coordination and inter-agency collaboration.

  • Jon Camfield, Product Policy Lead at Meta, detailed Meta’s four-pillar anti-scam strategy, including platform defences, user empowerment, network disruption, and data-sharing efforts.

A recurring theme throughout the session was the importance of accountability. While each organisation has made substantial efforts, panellists agreed that broader systemic change will only be possible through joint action, sustained dialogue, and transparent data-sharing. The Global Anti-Scam Alliance’s global presence and infrastructure — including the Global Signal Exchange and research capabilities — were recognised as critical tools in this effort.
